Summer Showoffs Review

One of the things I want/hope to do with this blog is highlight really wonderful things or groups so that others can discover them. All summer my Mischief has been in various summer camps but the one she waits for.....the one we MUST do every summer.....the one we register for in DECEMBER is Summer Showoffs!!!



For those who are not familiar with Summer Showoffs it is a week long day camp for 1st-12th grader. Over the course of a week they teach each group of campers 5-6 songs, dances and each camper that wants one gets a solo!! At the end of the week the entire camp preforms an amazing show choir level show. It is truly amazing to see what these counselors can do in just 4 days with these kids.

Mischief has been during Summer Showoffs since she was 4!! At the time they allowed rising Kindergarteners to come so she got to come that year. It only took one week and she was hooked. We mark the registration date on our calender EVERY December because the camps always fill up super fast. But this is more than just a song and dance camp. These people really teach the kids what it means to be amazing. Their motto is "If you can talk, you can sing.....and everyone can talk"

It is well documented what a powerful affect music has on children. It improves memory, brain power, confidence and so many other things but the one thing I love most about this camp is the bonds it creates. In this world of instant gratification and me-me-me, this camp teaches kids the importance of working with a group. If one person tries to outshine another, or doesn't work hard to learn the dance steps it can throw the whole group off. Rather than any form of competition or consequences Summer Showoffs uses ONLY positive encouragement. You should hear the other campers yell and cheer when another group shows off their days hard work. It is serious tear jerker level stuff.

Every single day my daughter would leave camp saying things like "We learned another WHOLE song today Mom" or "I got to practice my solo and everyone cheered for me". It is huge for her and other kids to see their peers and friends clapping and shouting for them. So often kids can be mean and tear each other down, for no reason other than their own insecurities. But for one week at least there is none of that. There are high fives and pats on the back and teams working together to put on an incredible show for parents and loved ones at the end of the week.

The founders of this camp began Summer Showoffs because they saw what the power of music can do. They have never failed to impress year after year. We will be life long Summer Showoff-ers.
